
ELA is an abbreviation for English Language Arts. It is the label applied to learning and using all aspects of the English language. From vocabulary and syntax through prose, poetry, and formal writing, All ELA starts with the alphabet, spelling and word recognition. We will start with a few definitions.
Definitions
- Alphabet = The 26 letters of the English alphabet can be heard spoken here:
- Children 1 – This 4-minute video is an introduction to the letters with spellings and pictures. Hearing the spoken alphabet is the first step to learning a language.
- ESL Learners 2 – This 12-minute video is better suited for those looking to hear the alphabet and learn the spelling of common words. It is useful for ear training.
- Spelling – The way letters of the alphabet are assembled to form words.
- Syntax – The way words are combined as parts of speech to construct sentences.
